Alfred's Costume

Alfred the beagle is a good sport. He is pictured here at the shelter's yard sale held last weekend, and for some reason somebody thought it would be fun to put rabbit ears on the old boy. He was a good sport about it all, and wandered around the sale visiting folks until he was exhausted and had to retire to his bed behind the dog desk. Alfred, those pink ears really clash with your orange vest! Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped out Saturday, and those who baked for the yard sale and to all who came to shop. It was a lovely fall day and the sale raised $900 to help the animals.

Marty the Star

Hi Everybody, it's me. Katie! Remember Marty, the cat that won the primary last January and became the Top Cat of New England? Animal Planet heard about him and went all the way up to the summit of Mt. Washington last week to film a story on his election and his new life at the Mount Washington Observatory. He will be on a show called "Cats 101" and it will be on sometime in late December or early January. Check in at conwayshelter.org for the exact schedule. Don't you love this pic of Marty sleeping? He was so tired from being a star and celebrity. All of us here at CAHS are so proud of him, and of Wilson and Sarah, too. They all ran great campaigns thanks to help from volunteer Hope who wrote their platforms for them. "Cheeseburgers and Fish Heads for Everyone!"

Lifelong Friends!

I am so excited about the Lifelong Friends Program here at CAHS. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, which is kind of how I feel on the outside, too. Lifelong Friends matches older animals (like myself, a mature yet stately feline) with animal lovers in their golden years. The older humans can adopt an animal for free from CAHS, and get a discount on veterinary care from participating veterinarians. Thanks to friends like Carole Cotton (pictured here with her furry family and Virginia and Alfred) this program is off to a wonderful beginning!

Katie here with some of my new friends. Just want to tell you that cats love summer! We love to look out the windows, lay on our porches, watch bugs, birds and people go by, and soak up the summer heat. This summer has been exciting so far with lots of summer storms. We have had many visitors and many cats and kittens have gone to their forever homes. Please come in and visit. You might meet that special cat or dog. Speaking of special cats and dogs, Dancer is feeling fine after his surgery and will soon be available for adoption. Gotta go now, it is time for my afternoon siesta and my porch is calling to me.

Dancer's Recovery!

Dancer went to Portland, Maine to have his surgery on Tuesday. June 10, and he came home this morning (Wed). He went directly to his friend Sandy's house to recover. He is pictured here, looking a little crabby and in need of a nap. The doc says Dancer will recover from his surgery and will lead a normal and happy kitty life! He was sooooo lucky, 'cause he has wonderful people and kitty friends all over the world who helped him with his medical expenses, and some also sent him wonderful toys to play with when he feels better! He told me he would share with all of his friends here at the shelter. I am looking forward to seeing his happy little self dancing and chirping up and down the hallway again. He is such a special kitty, and everyone here is working hard to see that Dancer gets the perfect home.

Please Help Dozer

Dozer is a loving, handsome, two-and-a-half-year-old chocolate Lab with a very sad story. He came to CAHS because his owner didn’t have time for him. He arrived very skinny. He drank bowl after bowl of water. Initial X-rays showed an enlarged kidney, and a biopsy was recommended. Dozer made two trips to a veterinary specialist in Portland and was diagnosed with liver shunt disease. Dozer went back on May 20 and had the surgery to repair the condition. He is currently in a foster home recuperating. Dozer's surgery was very involved and very expensive. He is expected to make a fine recovery and live a normal, happy dog life. All of my friends at CAHS are asking for your help to pay for Dozer's surgery. Time Warner Cable came out to film Dozer last week, and they are donating $500 and asking for people to match their gift. If you want to help Dozer, please send a check to: CAHS, PO Box 260, Conway, NH 03818. Please say it is for Dozer, and to match Time Warner. All of the funds received will go to help Dozer. Thanks to all of Dozer's wonderful friends who have come forward to help!

Kittens Lost and Found

This little kitten and her sister were found in a closet of an apartment some people were moving into. No momma, no brothers and sisters, just these two little calicos! Aren't they lucky? They were brought to CAHS and are now in a happy foster home. Come visit them in about 4 weeks!

The kittens in the viewing room are pretty smart! Shelter volunteer (and my friend) Morgaine discovered this one sleeping like this one morning recently. She came running into the cat house telling us all to come see! Sandy took this picture. I think it was this little kitty's way of saying "I'm Hungry!"

My New Blog!!

Hi! My name is Katie, and I am the office manager in the Cat Building at the Conway Area Humane Society. Since Bucky is adopted and living in his new forever home, and Tripod Tom has also found his new home, I am taking over as the Blog Queen. I am, after all, the Office Queen! I look like a Scottish Fold, but I actually had a bad case of ear mites many years ago that gave me my special look.
I want to tell you all about how wonderful things have been here at CAHS. The humans started a 1000-100-10 fundraiser, 'cause I heard the shelter might have to close its doors! What would happen to me and all of my feline and canine friends?? I was so upset I called all of my friends who went to new homes in the past year and asked them to help. Checks for $100 started coming in. So did checks for more and less than $100. The shelter has been saved, thanks to the kindness of my friends' humans! The humans who work at CAHS went out and asked for help everywhere they could think of - the TV, radio, newspapers, even in the streets, and help came from everywhere.
A little girl came in last week and gave $13 to help the animals here at the shelter. She was saving up to buy stuffed animals 'cause she lost her collection in a house fire, but when she heard we needed help she decided to give it to us. I didn't cry, but I saw the humans crying, they were so touched! Then some 4th graders from Hillside Elementary in Berlin called. I heard them all on the speaker phone reporting that they raised over $500 with a bake sale and setting up a table in front of Wal-Mart! Another little girl stole, oops I mean borrowed her mom's cell phone and called everyone in her contact list and asked them to send money to help! And so many others are out there helping! Some folks are collecting money in the place where they work and sending a collection. We are all so grateful. When the humans leave at the end of the night, we all talk about our favorite part of the day.I will report more later, as well as post some fun photos, but right now I have some data entry to do!
